Background of the study:
In Orlu, indigenous governance systems have traditionally been male-dominated, yet recent shifts highlight the evolving roles of women within these frameworks. Historical practices, rituals, and decision-making processes have begun to incorporate female voices, challenging long-held gender norms (Uche, 2023). Emerging evidence shows that the inclusion of women has positively influenced community development, conflict resolution, and social justice, indicating that gender dynamics are crucial to the evolution of traditional governance (Chidera, 2024). As global discourses on gender equality gain momentum, indigenous governance in Orlu is experiencing both resistance and gradual transformation. This study explores the changing gender roles within indigenous systems and evaluates their impact on local governance and cultural continuity, aiming to provide a balanced perspective on tradition and modern gender dynamics.
Statement of the problem:
Traditional indigenous governance in Orlu has historically sidelined women, resulting in limited female participation in leadership. Although recent changes are emerging, significant gender disparities persist. The study seeks to identify the barriers and opportunities for enhancing gender inclusivity in indigenous governance, addressing issues of representation and decision-making (Uche, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the current role of women in indigenous governance.
To identify barriers to female participation.
To recommend strategies for enhancing gender inclusivity.
Research questions:
What are the current gender roles in indigenous governance in Orlu?
What factors hinder women’s participation in leadership?
How can indigenous systems be reformed to improve gender equality?
Research Hypotheses:
Indigenous governance in Orlu is significantly gender-biased.
Cultural and structural factors limit female leadership roles.
Policy reforms can enhance gender inclusivity in traditional systems.
Significance of the study:
This study highlights the importance of gender inclusivity in indigenous governance, offering insights that can guide reforms aimed at achieving balanced representation and sustainable community development in Orlu (Uche, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to evaluating gender roles in indigenous governance systems in Orlu Local Government only, without addressing broader gender issues in other sectors.
Definitions of terms:
• Indigenous Governance: Traditional systems of community leadership and decision-making.
• Gender Roles: Socially constructed roles assigned to individuals based on their gender.
• Inclusivity: The practice of including all groups in decision-making processes.
